The FDA is seeking recalls of diet pills found to contain certain pharmaceutical ingredients: sibutramine (a controlled substance), rimonabant (not approved for U.S. marketing), phenytoin (an anti-seizure medication), and phenolphthalein (experimental cancer drug, also a suspected cancer causing agent). For some of these active pharmaceutical ingredients, the dosage exceeds FDA-recommended levels.

They have all been recalled by the fda: Fatloss Slimming, 2 Day Diet, 3x Slimming Power, Japan Lingzhi 24 Hours Diet, 5x Imelda Perfect Slimming, 3 Day Diet, 7 Day Herbal Slim, 8 Factor Diet, 7 Diet Day/Night Formula, 999 Fitness Essence, Extrim Plus, GMP, Imelda Perfect Slim, Lida DaiDaihua, Miaozi Slim Capsules, Perfect Slim, Perfect Slim 5x, Phyto Shape, ProSlim Plus, Royal Slimming Formula, Slim 3 in 1, Slim Express 360, Slimtech, Somotrim, Superslim, TripleSlim, Zhen de Shou, Venom Hyperdrive 3.0. All of these drugs have been recalled. They are marketed as “dietary supplements,” and are promoted or sold on Web sites and in retail stores.

In spite of claims that these products are "natural” or that they contain only “herbal” ingredients, they contain potentially harmful ingredients listed on their labels or in promos. These products are NOT approved by the FDA. They are illegal and potentially harmful.

The FDA may be taking enforcement steps, issuing warning letters, initiating seizures, injunctions, or criminal charges against the manufacturers. Have you suffered harm from using these diet drugs? After the drug Rimonabant was evaluated, it was NOT approved by the FDA for marketing in the United States (due to risk of neurological and psychiatric side effects—seizures, depression, anxiety, insomnia, aggressiveness, and suicidal thoughts among patients.) In Europe in the past two years, its usage is proven to be associated with depression, suicidal thoughts, at least five deaths and 720 adverse reactions. In Europe the drug is known as Acomplia.

The drug sibutramine which is in some of these products can cause high blood pressure, seizures, tachycardia, palpitations, heart attack or stroke. This drug can also cause interactions with other medications.

The laxative phenolphthalein presents a potential carcinogenic risk. Phenolphthalein has also been found to be genotoxic.
