What is Fosamax?

Fosamax, Merck's brand name for “Alendronate Sodium” was designed as an osteoporosis medication. It was FDA approved to reduce the risk of hip and spine fracture in postmenopausal women. Fosamax is a class of drug called bisphosphonate.

Side effects of taking Fosamax or other biphosphonates can include osteonecosis of the jaw according to findings published in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Symptoms of osteonecrosis may include swelling, jaw pain, loose teeth, numbness, gum infection, or slow healing after injury or surgery involving the gums.

Long time use of Fosamax has also been linked to atypical low-energy fractures or spontaneous non-spinal fractures. In case studies in the Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma, individualswho had been taking Fosamax over a long period of time were standing and their thigh bones broke spontaneously. Nine case reports reveal similar cases of spontaneous non-spinal fractures in individuals who had been taking Fosamax published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.
