California Heparin Lawyers Heparin is a naturally-occurring anticoagulant which was discovered in 1916 at Johns Hopkins University, and refined for use at at Connaught and sold by them until the 1950s. Baxter International, a major manufacturer of the drug, stopped selling almost all forms of Heparin due to foreign components revealed as "materials from an unacceptable vendor'" and a failure to "identify impurities and deficiencies'" with manufacturing equipment. (China is in the midst of a struggle with pig disease; and pig intestine is a primary ingredient in Heparin. ) The serious injuries and deaths have been associated with the use of Heparin from China have demonstrated a wide range of adverse events including allergic or hypersensitivity-type reactions, with symptoms such as low blood pressure, angioedema, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Whether or not the contamination was accidental or deliberate is a fact which is still under contention. Bleeding is the chief sign of heparin overdosage. Nosebleeds, blood in urine or tarry stools may be noted as the first sign of bleeding. Easy bruising or petechial formations may precede frank bleeding.
