California Heparin Lawyers

What is Heparin?

Heparin is a naturally-occurring anticoagulant which was discovered in 1916 at Johns Hopkins University, and refined for use at at Connaught and sold by them until the 1950s.

What are the dangers of Heparin?

Normally the chief complication that may result from heparin therapy is hemorrhage (Adrenal hemorrhage, Ovarian hemorrhage and/or Retroperitoneal hemorrhage. Also, hypersensitivity cam result in chills, fever and urticaria as the most usual manifestations, and asthma, rhinitis, lacrimation, headache, nausea and vomiting, and anaphylactoid reactions, including shock, occurring more rarely; and painful, ischemic and cyanosed limbs have in the past been attributed to allergic vasospastic reactions.

As of Mar. 1, 2008. Heparin is under suspicion for 21 deaths and hundreds of allergic reactions. By April, toxic imported Heparin had been linked to 81 deaths. Twelve Chinese companies have been identified as suppluing contaminated Heparin to 11 countries including Australia, Canada, China, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand and the United States. Baxter International, a major manufacturer of the drug, stopped selling almost all forms of Heparin due to foreign components revealed as "materials from an unacceptable vendor'" and a failure to "identify impurities and deficiencies'" with manufacturing equipment. (China is in the midst of a struggle with pig disease; and pig intestine is a primary ingredient in Heparin. ) The serious injuries and deaths have been associated with the use of Heparin from China have demonstrated a wide range of adverse events including allergic or hypersensitivity-type reactions, with symptoms such as low blood pressure, angioedema, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.

Whether or not the contamination was accidental or deliberate is a fact which is still under contention.

Bleeding is the chief sign of heparin overdosage. Nosebleeds, blood in urine or tarry stools may be noted as the first sign of bleeding. Easy bruising or petechial formations may precede frank bleeding.

Heparin sodium should NOT be used in patients with the following conditions: Severe thrombocytopenia.
